Cautious Samurai – Learning Anew

May 1, 2008 1 comment

Months ago, (and I do mean SEVERAL months ago), I started a painting of a samurai dude. The idea behind him was that he is cautiously drawing out his blade as he senses something nearby. The look I wanted was one of a sense of confidence. I also wanted to paint something that wasn’t anime. I didn’t get a chance to finish it, and moved on to other paintings like Mikuru and Moe Haruhi (among many others). Today I decided to go back on it and finish it. The end result was this:

Quickie Sketchies – Anime or Not? A Self Discovery.

You know, it’s interesting what impressions you give others, even though you don’t mean to sometimes. It happens to me a lot. I think mainly due to excessive behavior. I look upon my anime collection, my video games, my complete and utter otakuness. I even draw anime. What sort of impression does that give?

Obviously the impression of an otaku, obsessed with his hobby, so much so that it narrows the mind in terms of exposure to other cultures and art. For me, this is only partly the case.

I seem to give people the impression that Anime is the only thing that I know how to do (probably because that is mostly what I draw), and that I can’t draw other styles, or “stylized realism”.

I would have to say that this is not the case.

Alternate Mikuru

This isn’t the first time I’ve ever done fan-art. Everytime I do though, I try to represent the character in a different light, to show some variety and for people to think “what if…”. It certainly brings a bit of flavor to the picture. I decided to draw Mikuru Asahina. Mikuru is always getting abused and molested by Haruhi. She’s also completely, and ridiculously moe. So much so that I got sick and tired of it. What better way to try a fan art of Mikuru but with a completely opposite attitude for her?

Elf Girl Dancing

I love elf girls. I just like how slender and elegant they are. They are strong willed, but appear delicate. They have silky blonde hair and smooth skin. If you knew the habits of an elf, you probably wouldn’t think they were that great, but I’m just speculating… what would the habits of a forest elf be? Very animal-like? Not very becoming of the elegance they portray. But, the typical anime elf girl usually comes from mystical origins with elegance and civilized panache. The idea to paint this came to me in a flash, while chatting with a friend on a completely unrelated matter. It was then that I feverishly did a quick sketch to capture the idea.

Escape of the Ogre

March 11, 2008 3 comments

Years ago, specifically at or around 2004/2005, I can’t quite recall, I had decided to paint something different from my typical anime fanfare. I originally envisioned a robot of some sort, a giant, that had been unleashed and was running amok on some crazy rampage. Probably some experimental one. I eventually gave up on that idea in favor of a more human character that a viewer can sympathize with. The story about this painting involves a giant ogre that escapes an experimental complex with the help of a little robot friend. I began to paint, using techniques that I actually have forgotten how to do today.

How I Work

January 11, 2008 1 comment

I’ve decided to put up a little diary of the processes I go through in order to create a piece of art. This is not really a tutorial, as a lot of this stuff is hard to explain other than “You just gotta keep at it until you get it.” but this will give you a pretty good idea on how to approach a project. I’ll be using my Apprentice Mage painting as the example. (how fitting for a tutorial).
